Since October 2023 – Verkor has joined a consortium of 3 major French players to develop a new economical and lightweight battery module, guaranteeing total module safety in case of a thermal runaway situation. Such a module will have to meet the technical and economic requirements needed to manufacture a large series of automobiles.
With a total budget of almost 4.1 M€, Verkor, and its partners:
- Saint-Gobain Research Paris, project leader and R&D center of Groupe Saint-Gobain, expert in the development of innovative processes, products and solutions for the sustainable construction, industry, and mobility markets
- ENERSENS, an expert in the field of development, synthesis and manufacture of silica aerogels, the most thermally insulating solid materials available in the market.
- LEMTA, a national laboratory specializing in the field of thermal management of systems and the characterization of thermal properties at high temperatures, among other things
aim to address the following key issues:
- Next-generation materials offering unrivalled technical and economic characteristics (fire resistance, thermal and mechanical properties, cost)
- A new battery module design based on Verkor’s pouch cells,
- Early detection solutions for thermal runaway,
- Capabilities and skills in battery testing and modelling
This 3-years project is funded by the French state, in the framework of France 2023 program.
