Why lithium-ion?\u00a0<\/i>Lithium is a metal made up of electrons and protons. What makes this metal unique is its easy release of electrons that become ions, hence the term lithium-ion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does it work?<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A cell consists of four\u00a0principal\u00a0elements: a cathode, an anode, a separator and an electrolyte.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>As the battery discharges, the lithium\u00a0<\/span>ions\u00a0<\/span><\/b>will migrate: the electrons from the (negative)\u00a0<\/span>anode<\/span><\/b>\u00a0will move toward the electrons from the (positive)\u00a0<\/span>cathode<\/span><\/b>, and vice versa when the battery is charging. This migration of electrons creates an electric current.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Lithium\u00a0<\/span>cations\u00a0<\/span><\/b>need to be able to flow from negative to positive. They do this through the electrolyte, which permeates the separator and the electrodes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
